Aligning Move Dates with Internal Events

Move dates locked? Check.

Key players lined up? Check.

Relocation schedule created and circulated? Check.

All set? Nope.

One of the unexpected “gotchas” could be hiding right within your own organization, just quietly hibernating until that moment when you least expect it…the internal event that comes along to throw a wrench in your plan.

Every company has rhythms, whether they be year-ends, vacation seasons, technology upgrades, significant product introductions, seasonal sales spikes or annual audits, and they are well known throughout the organization.

A closer examination of those events that are less regular, or even non-repetitive, might just save your sanity.

Imagine, if you will, discovering that Marketing has been quietly cooking up a special promotion that will see a major bump in inventory receipts, and shipments, right around the time you are transferring operations.

Consider the effect the introduction of a new enterprise operating system would have if the launch date is a month before the big move. Even something as innocuous as a quality recall, incorrect label remedy, or immediate repackaging requirement could pull resources already earmarked for relocation related activities.

The key to sidestepping these landmines is communication, by sharing key relocation milestones with all the company stakeholders and providing a forum for feedback that compares their significant events with your schedule to ensure alignment.

It is not perfect, as dates have a nasty habit of changing, but at least everyone involved will realize that selecting new dates needs to be coordinated to avoid conflict.

As the project unfolds, it is always a good idea to be proactive in following up with your colleagues to make sure that all the balls stay in the air for everyone.
